As larvae, mosquitoes need organic debris like algae not only to feed on but also for protection. Removing excess vegetation with either a skimmer net or by installing a pond skimmer can be a great way to deter mosquitoes from breeding there and keep your water features clear. 

Another example of using the mosquito lifecycle as a way to eliminate them from your property is to make your stagnant water deep. Larvae need to surface to breathe, so water depths that exceed two feet will prevent them from emerging. 

Finally, another option is to keep the water moving. Water circulation increases surface tension and prevents larvae from surfacing for air. Try adding a bubbler, fountain, water wiggler, or waterfall to keep water circulating to deter mosquitoes. 

3. Try Biological Control Methods

Naturally occurring bacterium like Bacillus Thuringiensis Israelensis (BTI) can be used as a safe and effective larvicide, as it specifically targets mosquito larvae. BTI only affects larvae, leaving your water safe for predatory insects, birds, and mammals. However, as it will only affect larvae, adult mosquitoes will remain present until their life cycle ends.
