About Us: More Than Mosquito Control—A Legacy of Service

We Don’t Just Kill Mosquitoes

At Mosquito Authority of Richmond, controlling mosquitoes and pests is what we do—but protecting people, developing leaders, and strengthening communities is who we are.

Our story began with Dr. Anthony Duncan, but it has never been the story of one person. It is the story of phenomenal team members who believed that a local service business could become a force for good.

Their skill protects our customers. Their compassion powers our outreach. Their ideas drive our innovation. Their leadership has helped us grow from a single truck into an award-winning, multi-market organization.

None of the awards, growth, service, or community impact described here would have been possible without our team.

2010-2014: One Truck, One Backpack Fogger, and a Bigger Purpose

Long before Mosquito Authority of Richmond became an industry leader, Dr. Duncan had dedicated his career to health, wellness, and serving young people and families.

Trained in clinical and community psychology, he was one of eight students accepted into the Virginia Consortium doctoral program, provided psychological services for more than eight years, founded Total Wellness Centers in Richmond, and became a public speaker on health, wellness, and youth development. He worked for approximately five years with the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice, counseled hundreds of youth and families, and was recognized as Practitioner of the Year in. That experience shaped a leadership philosophy grounded in service, accountability, mentorship, and the belief that businesses should improve the communities in which they operate.

Dr. Duncan purchased the Richmond Mosquito Authority territory in . The operation began humbly—with one truck, one backpack fogger, and a determination to build something meaningful. In , he left his previous career to operate the business full time.

The young company quickly developed a reputation for excellence. Mosquito Authority recognized the Richmond operation with the Passion for Excellence Award in and the Vanguard of the Year Award in, one of the franchise system’s highest honors. The emerging story was also captured in the public video profile Mosquito Authority Life: Anthony Duncan, which highlighted the opportunity to serve families while building greater flexibility for his own. Those awards and the growing public profile reflected the foundation our team was building: dependable service, disciplined operations, care for customers, and an expectation that every team member could grow into a leader.

2015-2017: Leadership During a Public-Health Challenge

As the business grew, Dr. Duncan began serving on the Mosquito Authority corporate Advisory Board, helping represent franchisee perspectives and strengthen the larger organization. But our leadership was never limited to meetings or titles. When the Zika virus created fear and uncertainty for families, our team stepped forward.

Dr. Duncan participated in the workgroup that helped secure the Virginia Emergency Zika Response mosquito-control contract with the Virginia Department of Health. During the Zika period, we also offered free mosquito treatments to expecting parents, giving families greater peace of mind during a serious public-health concern.

By , the Richmond business ranked No. 6 among Mosquito Authority’s top ten franchises. Yet business performance was only one measure of success. That same period included meaningful support for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Richmond, continuing a long-standing commitment to young people, mentoring, and local families.

In 2017, our mission reached far beyond Virginia. After Hurricane Maria, Dr. Duncan and members of the team traveled to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where they performed a week of pro-bono mosquito-control work. They then continued to Puerto Rico, coordinated with FEMA, and distributed food and water to elderly residents in the Fajardo area.

At the same time, the business expanded into additional markets, including Maryland and New York, while developing operations in Puerto Rico. Back in Richmond, we created an in-office mentoring initiative that supported young adults and reinforced a lesson that still guides us today: growth matters most when it creates opportunities for other people.

2018-2020: Investing in Children, Families, and Community Leadership

Our community work continued to grow alongside the company. Dr. Duncan served on the board of The Way 4Life Family Services, participating in organizational decisions, community initiatives, and a major children’s book drive. That collective effort delivered more than 1,000 books to 427 elementary students.

We also built a multi-year relationship with the Richmond Kickers’ Little Kicks youth soccer program. Through sponsorship and continued involvement, we helped create positive experiences for children and families beyond the backyard.

This period reflected an important evolution in our identity.

We were not simply expanding a pest-control company. We were building a team that could use its resources, relationships, and influence to support education, youth development, healthy families, and neighborhood life.

2021-2023: Showing Up When Our Community Needed Us

When the COVID-19 pandemic placed extraordinary pressure on medical professionals, our team committed to providing 100 free yard treatments per month to frontline medical workers. It was our way of saying thank you and helping the people caring for the community find comfort in their own outdoor spaces.

During these years, Dr. Duncan also served actively on the franchise system’s Pest Advisory Council, also known as the Pest Advisory Committee. His work included coordinating franchisee feedback, organizing rosters and meeting notes, advancing deliverables and action items, and recruiting additional franchisees to help improve the system. This was leadership in practice—not simply holding a seat, but helping turn ideas into action.

Our philanthropic relationships deepened as well. We became a sponsor and partner of the Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia, participated in its Funding Fathers community, and supported its Father Figure campaign and work with fathers and families. We supported Impact Others, an act of giving later highlighted through a testimonial-video effort involving business leader Eddie Wilson. We also began a significant, multi-year relationship with Chair the Love, making recurring gifts that helped provide the Gift of Mobility to people whose lives could be transformed by access to a wheelchair.

These efforts joined a broader history of support for youth programs, families, mobility initiatives, humanitarian causes, and local organizations. Throughout the years, more than $100,000 has been donated to various organizations and causes. We are proud of that financial impact, but we are equally proud of the time, labor, mentorship, free services, and personal commitment contributed by our team.

2024: Expanding Our Voice and Continuing to Serve

In 2024, we continued supporting youth recreation through the WaveRiders swim team, adding to our history of investing in programs that help children build confidence, discipline, and community.

Dr. Duncan was also invited to serve on the franchise system’s Marketing Advisory Council, where he continues to represent franchisee perspectives in systemwide marketing initiatives. His service on the corporate Advisory Board, Pest Advisory Council, and Marketing Advisory Council reflects a consistent commitment to helping the entire franchise network improve—not only our Richmond operation.

Our relationship with Chair the Love also continued to grow, reinforcing our belief that a business can help expand freedom, dignity, and opportunity far beyond the customers it directly serves.

2025: Franchisee of the Year—and a Community Legacy Still Growing

In 2025, Dr. Duncan was named Mosquito Authority Franchisee of the Year. The recognition was announced through the International Franchise Association, featured by Pest Control Technology, celebrated in a commemorative video, and later preserved in franchise presentation materials.

The award recognized significant year-over-year revenue growth, the development of people and leaders, active engagement with franchise coaching, operational innovation, early adoption of virtual assistants, and personalized social-media outreach. It also reflected the growth of a multi-unit organization with operations connected to Richmond, San Juan, and the Colorado market.

But the award did not belong to one person.

It belonged to the technicians who deliver dependable service in difficult conditions. It belonged to the customer-care professionals who listen, solve problems, and build trust. It belonged to the managers who coach others and strengthen our culture. It belonged to every team member who helped transform a one-truck operation into a recognized leader.

That same year, Dr. Duncan co-founded Operation Holiday Hope with Dr. A. K. Nayar. Hosted at our Richmond office, the Christmas initiative was designed to provide gifts and support to as many as Richmond-area families. The event brought together business leadership, volunteers, community partners, and a shared commitment to make the holidays brighter for local families.

2026 and Beyond: Building Pathways, Not Just a Business

Our legacy continues to evolve. In 2026, the Franchisee of the Year story received additional industry recognition through Pest Control Technology, while the award video and presentation materials continued to share what our team had accomplished.

Dr. Duncan’s service also expanded into new areas. He is developing a second-chance recruitment and vocational partnership with the Virginia Department of Corrections, intended to create workforce opportunities and career pathways for referred individuals. He serves as a Director of The Way of the Lord Farm Ministry, supporting faith-driven agricultural and community initiatives. His personal service has also included donating blood through the American Red Cross, where he was recognized as a second-time donor. These efforts reflect the same principle that guided our beginning: a successful business should create safety, opportunity, dignity, and hope.

Our Team Is the Legacy

Our history includes awards, franchise rankings, public-health contracts, expansion into new markets, humanitarian relief, youth mentorship, nonprofit board service, advisory leadership, financial giving, free treatments, community sponsorships, workforce development, and national industry recognition.

But a list of accomplishments cannot fully explain who we are.

Our real legacy lives in the team member who takes extra time to help a customer. It lives in the technician who treats every property with care. It lives in the leader who develops the next leader. It lives in the employee who volunteers, mentors, gives, and carries our values into the community.

From one truck and one backpack fogger to Franchisee of the Year, our journey has always been powered by people. We honor Dr. Duncan’s vision, but we celebrate the phenomenal team that turns that vision into meaningful impact every day.
